Poem about my dad.

My Dad Who Couldn't See
By Margaret E Germain. ©️10/25/16-2026

He was always there when I needed him-
My dad who couldn't see.
I'd run to him when he came home from work
His big arms reached out to me.

When I was little I was his guide,
I wore a little harness with a leash .
Yes, I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
but really, we were quite a piece.

I was daddy’s little girl
He was my hero and my friend
Defender when I needed him
I loved him till the end

One day we walked down to the big town square
Past the policeman in the center
It was Dad and me stopping traffic all around
The blind man led by his tiny daughter.

We'd sit together with our books, at night,
his in Braille, mine in print.
Reading our stories together was such fun,
sometimes he'd give me a hint.

I learned to dance standing up on his big shoes,
around the kitchen floor.
It's been hard to find someone with shoes like those;
someone that I would adore.

Little girls grow up to be strong women
We act and think for ourselves
This daddy's girl thought an awful lot
I just wanted to be my own true self.

I’d happily worn a harness to lead
But outgrew that tiny restriction.
I took it off and was finally freed
But found that to be a source of friction.

Who are we that we can love too much and try to control another?
When love holds us back and won't let us breathe
Then love can start to smother.

Don't hold me too close or put me on a leash
I won't stay there long, you'll see.
My dad loved me so much, I know that, it's true.
But love me and let me be -- me.
